Which historical event is commemorated on November 5th in the United Kingdom?

November 5th is linked to the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when a group of conspirators planned to blow up Parliament and King James I to restore Catholic rule. The plot was foiled before it could be carried out, and Guy Fawkes was captured guarding the concealed gunpowder. In memory of the king’s survival, the day became a national occasion known as Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night, traditionally celebrated with bonfires and fireworks. The other events listed—Magna Carta signing, the Glorious Revolution, and the defeat of the Spanish Armada—are not associated with this date.
